No list of top ABA graduate programs is complete without including universities that offer doctoral degrees. A master’s is the generally accepted standard to practice as an applied behavior analyst and the standard path to earning BCBA certification. That said, more and more ABAs with their sights set on research breakthroughs and independent practice are going for their doctorate.
That distinction can also qualify you to use the BCBA-D designation if you already hold BCBA certification, which recognizes doctoral-level training in behavior analysis.
So how did we approach this list? We focused on what matters most to people looking for the most efficient path to career preparation or advancement. When you’re weighing graduate program options, you’re probably asking the same two questions:

The answers are more connected than you might think. It all comes back to the courses. To help make sense of that connection, especially for anyone weighing a doctorate against a master’s, we asked a program leader with experience on both sides of that decision to weigh in.

Why Coursework Is the Key to BCBA Certification
A master’s or even a doctorate in applied behavior analysis alone isn’t enough to qualify for the BCBA or BCBA-D designation. Certification depends on your degree, fieldwork, and exam score together, and the degree piece runs through one of two BACB pathways.
Pathway 1 means your degree itself comes from a program accredited by ABAI or APBA. Accreditation does the verification work, so no separate coursework attestation is needed. Pathway 2 means your university has a designated Pathway 2 Program Contact, a full-time BCBA or BCBA-D faculty member, who reviews your coursework and attests directly to the BACB that it meets current requirements.
The BACB retired ABAI’s old Verified Course Sequence (VCS) system on January 1, 2026, and replaced course-by-course VCS review with this faculty-attestation model for Pathway 2. If your program had a VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation filed before December 31, 2025, that specific attestation is still usable on a certification application through December 31, 2026.
Pathway 2 isn’t going away overnight, but it isn’t permanent either. The BACB has said Pathway 2 will be discontinued as of January 1, 2032, at which point Pathway 1, meaning an accredited degree, becomes the only route. If you’re choosing a program now, ask directly whether it holds ABAI or APBA accreditation, or has an active Pathway 2 Program Contact who can attest your coursework, and factor that 2032 deadline into how future-proof the program is.
How to Verify a Graduate Program Qualifies
The clearest way to check is to confirm the specific degree, campus, and format you’re applying to appears in ABAI’s accredited-program directory, or in APBA’s directory if the program holds APBA accreditation instead. APBA’s current accreditation scope covers master’s degree programs in the US and Canada, so it won’t apply to every listing here. Accreditation doesn’t automatically extend to every related program a school offers. A university can have one accredited on-campus master’s and a separate, unaccredited online version, or a related certificate that isn’t covered at all. Check the exact degree and format you’re considering, not just the department’s reputation.

Selection Criteria
To narrow down our selection of top graduate programs, we reviewed master’s, doctoral, and graduate certificate programs across the field, including many that previously held VCS recognition. After reviewing more than 200 programs, we selected the 35 profiled below based on the following criteria:
- Holds ABAI or APBA accreditation for the specific degree listed, or has a documented path to Pathway 2 coursework attestation
- Have a student-to-faculty ratio of no more than 20:1
- Annual graduate school tuition rates are in line with the national average for public and private institutions, adjusted for location

With 35 programs at various degree levels to choose from, accreditation and Pathway 2 status are just the starting point. There are harder questions worth asking before you commit.

What qualifications and experience do the instructors have?
Faculty will shape the direction, depth, and impact of your education more than almost anything else. The best instructors combine real clinical experience treating clients as behavior analysts with the ability to translate that knowledge in the classroom. It’s a specific combination and not an easy one to find, but the top programs in the country are the ones that manage it.

How much hands-on experience will you get, and where?
ABA is a field where direct experience is the best way to truly master the work. It’s also one where professional credentials require that experience. Many top graduate programs build fieldwork directly into the curriculum through practicum or internship placements, which get you started on BACB clock hours right away.
Where you get that experience matters just as much as how much you get. The most effective way to build expertise is by working with the population you plan to treat before you graduate. Programs that offer placements in your area of interest should rank high on your list.

Is the program in education, psychology, or straight ABA?
Not all of these degrees are pure ABA programs. Many are graduate programs in education, special education, or psychology. Most include coursework built toward BCBA certification, but the exact fit varies, so confirm accreditation or Pathway 2 status for the specific degree rather than assuming it from the department name.

What research does the school support, and does it align with your goals?
Particularly at the doctoral level, but even in many master’s programs, research fuels competent ABA instruction. As a field founded in experimentation, applied behavior analysis relies heavily on teaching through doing.
Look for schools with active research centers, community partnerships, and faculty who regularly publish in major ABA journals such as the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior or the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Programs with strong records in conference presentations are also a good indicator of a research-active department.
