35 Top ABA Graduate Programs (Master's and Doctorate)

No list of top schools offering quality ABA graduate degrees is quite complete without including universities that offer doctorate programs. Sure, a master’s is the generally accepted standard to practice as an applied behavior analyst (not to mention the standard path to earning BCBA® certification). Still, more and more ABAs with their sights set on contributing research breakthroughs and establishing independent practices of their own are going for their doctorate.

Oh, and, by the way, that’s a distinction that will qualify you for the highly esteemed BCBA-D® certification.

So how did we approach the task of deciding which ABA graduate programs would make the list? Simple really – we considered the things we know to be most important to people looking to take the most efficient path to career preparation or advancement.

We know anybody weighing graduate program options is asking the same two questions:

  • How long will it take?
  • How much will it cost?

As it turns out, the answers to these questions are more closely related than you might think: It’s all about the courses.

BCBA®® Certification Rests on the ABA Classes You Take At The Graduate Level

A master’s or even a doctorate in applied behavior analysis alone isn’t enough to make sure you’re going to quality for the BCBA® or BCBA®-D certification you’re after. You may absorb all the high-level knowledge of behaviorism and elite clinical skills that a human can hold, but that’s not the key to certification.

If the program hasn’t been pre-approved through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) as including the right mix of courses, at best you’ll have to submit your transcripts for review to see if you made the cut. And even that option is going away at the end of 2025!

At worst, you’ll learn that some of the course content you needed wasn’t covered, giving you no other choice but to go through the costly and time consuming process of enrolling in a post-master’s certificate program to catch you up with the training you need.

The solution? Simply select a master’s or doctorate program that already includes the required coursework and save yourself some stress.

How to Verify a Graduate Degree Includes Required Coursework To Obtain BCBA® Certification

The easiest way to find an appropriate degree at the graduate level for BCBA® certification is to pick one that holds a specialty accreditation from ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International) or APBA (Association of Professional Behavior Analysts).

Since all the programs on our list are ABAI-BAAB-accredited, they’ve already received the BACB’s stamp of approval. Not only is the course sequence these programs offer BACB-approved, they have also met other rigorous standards for accreditation enforced by the Behavior Analysis Accreditation Board of ABAI.

Whether you’re interested in earning a master’s in applied behavior analysis, or even if you’re ready to start studying ABA at the doctoral level, we hope the information we’ve gathered will help you narrow down your options and find a program that best meets your needs.

Selection Criteria

To narrow down our selection of top graduate programs, we started by looking at the 230-plus master’s, doctorate, graduate certificate, and independent Verified Course Sequence programs that have been pre-approved by BACB as having met the curriculum requirements for the BCBA® exam. After a careful review of more than 200 top quality graduate schools, 35 programs stood out from the crowd and were selected based on the following criteria:

  • Hold accreditation through the Behavior Analysis Accreditation Board of ABAI or APBA
  • Have a student to faculty ratio of no more than 20:1
  • Annual graduate school tuition rates in-line with the national average for public and private institutions adjusted for location
  • Master’s and PhD programs are listed separately and some schools on our list offer both. To give you the full picture of what each school offers, we included all the ABAI-BAAB accredited programs within the department.

Other Criteria to Consider When Looking for the Best Graduate Programs in Applied Behavior Analysis

With 35 different programs at various levels to choose from, it’s pretty clear that these criteria aren’t the only ones you will use when it comes to picking the right ABA education.

Of course, there are all the practical matters at hand—schools close to home are a natural place to start, so we have grouped these by state to make those easy to find. Just as much a factor may be the program format, whether they are available online or on campus or both, so we’ve included that information as well.

When you are looking for the best graduate programs in applied behavior analysis, you have to ask some hard questions.

Beyond those practical matters, though, there are substantial issues of quality and focus that you’ll want to drill down on. The kind of questions you should be asking of each of these programs should include:

What kind of qualifications and experience do the instructors have?

Maybe more than any other quality, the faculty at your chosen school will influence the direction, impact, and depth of your education as a behavior analyst. They have to embody the critical combination of practical experience treating clients as an ABA themselves together with the scholarly aptitude to convey that knowledge and skill to students. It’s not an easy match, but the top schools in the country are the ones that can manage it.

How much hands-on experience will you get and where will you get it?

Not only is ABA a field where direct field experience is the best way to truly master the ebb and flow of treatments; it’s also one where professional credentials absolutely require that experience. Many, if not most of the top graduate programs in ABA will directly include some field experience, through practicum or internship placements. That gets you started on counting your clock hours toward BACB qualifications. But even more crucially, it’s part of mastering the concepts and theory you are presented with in the classroom.

Where you get that experience is also important. The best way to build your professional expertise is by focusing on the population you intend to treat before you even graduate. Schools that offer placements in those fields should be front and center in your explorations.

Alternatively, it’s possible that you don’t have a specific population in mind as you begin your educational journey into behavior analysis. And in that case, what you will want is a school that has a wide range of experiential opportunities, a chance to sample the broad range of applications of ABA to give you a chance to find what fits.

Is the program in education, psychology, or straight ABA?

Speaking of the broad applications of the field of applied behavior analysis, you’ll notice right away that not all of these degrees are full degrees in ABA: many are graduate programs in education, special education, or psychology.

While the inclusion of the required coursework is enough to ensure they all qualify you to pursue a BCAB, in other ways those studies can be very different. And that’s important as you are considering what type of career to pursue. A special education program will have a very different emphasis, different instructor backgrounds, and different field placements than one in counseling psychology.

Fortunately, we’ve got a broad mix of degree programs here, so you should be able to find something that fits your ideas about where you want your ABA to take you.

What sort of research projects does the school support and how do they align with your goals?

Particularly at the doctoral level, but even as a part of master’s degree programs, research is the lifeblood that fuels competent ABA instruction. As a field founded in experimentation, applied behavior analysis is exceptionally reliant on teaching through trying. Research, of course, is how you identify and attempt new behavioral solutions.

So you will want to be looking for schools that have active centers of research, community partnerships, and professors and grad students who are regularly published in major ABA journals like Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior or Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Schools that have high rates of students who are selected to present at major conferences are also good picks.

The following list of master’s and doctoral programs are presented in no particular order, and we’ve made no attempt at ranking them. Instead, we’ve provided what we think are the most relevant points about each program so that you can make a well-informed decision on your own.

So here it is – a complete list of the best ABA graduate programs around…

Other Questions People Frequently Ask About The Best Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Applied Behavior Analysis

What is The Difference Between Accreditation, Recognition, and Verified Course Sequence (VCS)?

VCS is a system that has been in use in recent years to approve a certain section of coursework as meeting ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International) and BACB standards for certification. It has been possible for students to present their coursework, from any school, to BACB for recognition. However, most use a process to attestation, with a designated VCS coordinator from a recognized program verifying that their coursework meets standards.

VCS is sunsetting, however, and ABAI and BACB are moving to a different track. While attestation will remain accepted, more and more schools are shifting into ABAI’s Tiered Model of Education. Schools on this track are recognized as moving toward full accreditation, and their coursework will be just as valid as a VCS program.

Full accreditation from either ABAI, or a new accreditor, APBA (Association for Professional Behavior Analysts), is the ultimate goal. A more intensive validation of the school’s academic credentials, accreditation takes longer but is a better indicator of overall quality. Eventually, this will be required of all BCBA®-qualifying programs, so it makes sense to start there now!

Why is the VCS System Going Away?

VCS was promoted originally for two reasons: first, to give students like you some indication whether or not a particular degree program at a particular school would qualify them for BCBA® certification. Second, the system allowed BACB to expedite their processing of applications—the organization could just check to see if a particular course sequence had been pre-approved rather than manually evaluating each applicant’s transcript on a case-by-case basis.

The new ABAI tiered model takes care of the first issue, while the introduction of VCS coordinators, officials at each school, to attest to compliance for graduates removed the second.

Does the Sunsetting of VCS Impact My Choice of ABA Degree Programs?

No, most students shouldn’t notice much, if any, difference in their training or certification applications even as VCS is being phased out. The attestation process has been in use for a while and is already typical. The ability for course-by-course review of classwork will be removed, but few students have been relying on that option anyway.

Most, if not all, programs that currently hold VCS recognition are expected to participate in the ABAI Tiered Model, so all that will happen is a shift in how the school is recognized, not the fact that it is accepted.

Is It Important To Find a Fully Accredited ABA Degree Program When Looking for Top Schools?

Although it’s desirable to attend a fully accredited program that meets your needs if that’s an option, it’s not something that should make or break your choice of ABA graduate degrees.

It’s true that full accreditation is a higher standard than just recognition or inclusion of a Verified Course Sequence. But it’s not the whole story, either.

That’s because the lengthy accreditation process—and shifting terrain in the field—is a logjam that even truly excellent schools face as an obstacle. Since it takes years, and the VCS/accreditation process has changed a number of times, it’s not necessarily any indication of low standards if a school hasn’t completed that process yet. It takes time and resources. Particularly for programs that aren’t entirely focused on ABA (such as psychology and education degrees), pursuing accreditation may not have been at the top of their punch list. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t achieve it, or won’t eventually.

What Are the Differences in Training Between Master’s and Doctoral Programs in ABA?

Leaving aside the obvious answer that a doctoral degree in behavior analysis will take you anywhere between three and four years of study versus the two years of studies for a master’s program, there are also structural and substantive differences in the training aspects of master’s and doctoral degrees in any field.

A high level of background knowledge and theory is packed into a master’s program, but it’s almost all aimed at creating superb practitioners. That also includes practicum hours, where supervised field experience takes classroom lessons and hones them into assessment and treatment skills.

A master’s in ABA is typically a practice-oriented program.

Traditionally, doctoral degrees don’t just include more advanced knowledge; they also are angled toward more original thinking, research, and academic skills in the field.

In a field like ABA, where experimentation is vital at almost every level of practice, that makes doctoral grads the elite in research design and execution. They also have the deeper knowledge to unpack concepts that have been proven to determine the psychological mechanisms at work. And they have a broader view of the field that allows them to tie concepts together in innovative and important ways.

Put all of that together and throw in some courses in instruction and mentorship, and you also have a recipe for excellent graduate-level educators. These are the ABAs who will be training the next generation of BCBA®s and BCaBA®s.

What Are the Differences Between Earning a BCBA® and a BCBA-D®?

Although there are substantial differences in the depth of education at the master’s and doctoral levels, there is no daylight at all between the BACB coursework requirements for certification at either level. Any accredited, recognized, or, currently, program with a Verified Course Sequence will qualify you for a BCBA®.

You’ll qualify for the BCBA-D® only when you:

  • Earn a doctorate from an ABAI-accredited program
  • Earn a doctorate from a non-accredited program but with a dissertation in behavior-analytic subjects, plus mentorship, additional coursework, or relevant publications
  • Already hold a doctorate but then complete postdoctoral experience as well as publishing in the field

The BCBA®-D has no additional authority and covers the same scope of practice as a BCBA®—the credential exists solely to signify additional education experience.
