Because all these programs include the exact coursework you’re required to complete and some of the necessary on-the-ground experience you’ll need before being eligible to take the certification exam. And none of them will require you to have your coursework submitted for review or attestation. They’ve already been through all the checks.
These programs have all the courses you need for BCBA® certification. Choose any program on this list and there’s no worrying about meeting additional coursework requirements.
What’s Happening With ABAI and APBA in ABA Degree Accreditation?
If you’ve been paying attention to the ABA field over the past few years, APBA, the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts, has probably come up in discussions about accredited master’s programs. If you’re seeing it for the first time here, that’s not surprising. Most published guidelines haven’t been rewritten to include this newer accreditor yet.
Big changes have been underway in the accreditation landscape for ABA training. Fortunately, you don’t need to sort through all of it yourself. ABAI and BACB are managing the transition behind the scenes, working directly with schools offering ABA graduate programs.
APBA has been around as a professional organization for ABAs since 2007 but began rolling out its program accreditation standards in 2024. The group is designed to offer a real alternative while still meeting the same mission and standards for programs built to prepare ABA practitioners. The BACB now recognizes programs accredited by APBA as qualifying under its Pathway 1 university training option.
It takes time to evaluate and approve programs, so it may be a couple more years before APBA-accredited programs are widely available. But there’s a good chance that many schools previously offering programs under the Verified Course Sequence (VCS) will eventually carry the APBA stamp. The field is gradually shifting away from the VCS model toward fully accredited programs.
Still, we know there’s a lot more to consider when selecting a program. We pored over university disclosure pages and sifted through data published in the National Center for Education Statistics database to answer the questions you’re most likely to have:

There are many paths to getting your educational requirements met for BCBA® certification (at least 14, if you count all the different tiers and variations in the BCBA® handbook), but for our purposes and yours, the best choices are the most straightforward. That means ABAI-accredited master’s programs that qualify you to take the BCBA® exam without any additional post-graduate work to get the necessary coursework in.
The Verified Course Sequence (VCS) covered over 200 graduate schools as the field shifted toward full accreditation as the standard pathway. But there are only about 36 institutions with ABAI-accredited master’s programs. That’s a pretty elite group to start with, and that’s what you’ll find here.
A note on the pass rates below: these reflect the BACB’s 2024 University Examination Pass Rates, the last year of the previous exam edition. A new sixth-edition exam launched in January 2025, so 2024 and earlier figures are not directly comparable to later ones. Where a program’s cohort was too small for the BACB to report, we note the school’s own figure and its year.
Experienced Instructors Are Key to Making an ABA Master’s Program Exceptional
It doesn’t do much good to have easy access to instructors if they don’t have the level of experience it takes to draw on genuine, hard-won knowledge with diverse clients. Top schools always have top faculty. These are names you regularly see published in places like The Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior and The Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and presenting at ABAI’s Annual Conference. More often than not, they stay involved through both active research and real-world client work.
What Sort of Practicum Standards Do Top ABA Degrees Come With?
You already know you’ll need 1,500–2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork depending on the pathway you choose before you can qualify for your BCBA®. While you won’t necessarily complete all of it during your graduate program, the top ABA master’s programs include practicum and internship opportunities to get you started.
It takes a lot of practice to truly master ABA and internalize what your classes are designed to teach you. It all starts with having real opportunities to apply that knowledge with actual clients, under the guidance of instructors and staff, while you’re still a graduate student.
Why Are Close Community Ties So Important in ABA Education?
Along the same lines, top schools typically go well beyond the minimum when it comes to lining up diverse field placement opportunities. ABA is a field with enormously wide applications across populations and industries, and different students have different career goals. Not all of those goals are going to be met in one place.
In many cases, the best universities with behavior analysis programs have school-run clinics or treatment programs on campus where students serve the community while getting their hours. So expect a variety of choices when the time comes: private behavioral therapy clinics, school districts, industrial and workplace applications, healthcare facilities, and more.

For top schools to draw in top instructors with real field experience, they need to give those practitioners room to pursue discovery and investigation. Baseline Selection Criteria
We looked at the more than 200 graduate schools that offer a BACB-approved
Verified Course Sequence (VCS) as part of a master’s degree in ABA, Psychology
or Education. We identified the 20 schools we believe deserve special recognition
for meeting the following criteria:

Do I Need an ABAI-Accredited Program To Become a BCBA®?
Not strictly. Most states don’t require an accredited program to get licensed. But as of 2026, an ABAI-accredited program, or one that’s ABAI-recognized or APBA-accredited, is the cleanest path. Your coursework is already vetted for BCBA® eligibility, so you won’t be chasing down separate approvals after you graduate. Every program on this list clears that bar.
I Keep Seeing “VCS” Mentioned. Is the Verified Course Sequence Still a Thing?
No. The VCS system sunset on December 31, 2025. For years it was how schools confirmed their courses met BCBA® requirements, but the field has moved to accreditation plus a simpler coursework-verification step. If a guide you’re reading leans heavily on finding a “VCS program,” that’s a sign it’s out of date. It isn’t something you need to look for today.
If VCS Is Gone, How Does My Coursework Qualify Me for the BCBA® Exam Now?
There are two main routes. If your program is ABAI-accredited, ABAI-recognized, or APBA-accredited, you’re set. The coursework is pre-approved under BACB’s Pathway 1.
