62 Top Schools with Online ABA Programs

Countless fields have benefitted from the abundance of top-quality online programs that produce qualified graduates eager to make an impact in their field – and applied behavior analysis is no exception.

You probably already know you will need BCBA® certification for state licensure to work as an independent applied behavior analyst. And you’re probably also well-aware that the required coursework for that certification will have to come either with or on top of a master’s degree in education, psychology, or ABA itself. Whether you stack the classes on with a post-graduate certificate or get them as a component of the degree itself, it’s a lot of deep study, research, and often hands-on practice to get there.

By the time you get to a place in your career path where you are angling for that master’s, though, it’s pretty common to haven taken on other personal or business obligations that make it that much harder to study.

That’s why online programs are of particular interest to many future ABAs. Now is the time to explore which one might be the right fit for you.

Other Factors to Consider When Looking for Online Graduate Programs in Applied Behavior Analysis

Other Questions People Commonly Ask About Fully Online Applied Behavior Analysis Degree Programs

Should I Get an ABA Master’s Degree or an ABA Certificate Online?

For teachers early in their careers, students of psychology, and future ABAs with their sights set on BCBA® certification, earning a qualifying master’s in education, psychology, or behavior analysis is the goal.

For those who have already earned their graduate degree in one of these areas but just need to complete the BACB-Verified Course Sequence so they can meet eligibility requirements for the certification exam, a post-master’s course sequence in ABA (typically through a post-graduate certificate program) is what they’re after.

Fortunately, more than 60 institutions in the U.S. offer master’s degree and advanced certificate programs in an online format to accommodate teachers, BCaBAs® looking to advance, and other working students and professionals who need the convenience and flexibility they can only get from an online program.

But how do you know the online grad degree or certificate program you choose will qualify you for BCBA® certification? Fortunately, many institutions offering programs online have already done the work of designing a series of courses and getting a stamp of approval from the BACB.

Here we’ve put the very best pre-qualified online programs available in the U.S. in one place – all 62 of them. This means zero guesswork and no worries about needing to submit your transcripts and course syllabus to the BACB for evaluation. Every single one of the programs shown here has already been evaluated and has received pre-approval from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. And every single one of these programs is available entirely online with absolutely no regular in-person attendance requirements.

Field Experience Note: Some online programs offer distance practicum options or assistance with placement for independent field work. Students in programs that don’t make these options available are responsible for gaining the 1500 hours of supervised fieldwork needed to meet BACB experience requirements independently.

Selection Criteria

There are more than 200 graduate schools that offer the BACB-approved Verified Course Sequence (VCS) as part of a master’s degree, advanced certificate, or stand-alone course sequence. Of course, not all of those are available online. We selected the 62 that are, and that we feel deserve to be recognized for offering the kind of quality, flexibility, and affordability ABA graduate students are looking for:

  • Online programs with little or no in-person requirements
  • Annual graduate school tuition rates in-line with the national average for public and private institutions adjusted for location
  • Hold institutional accreditation through a regional and/or national agency recognized by the US Department of Education

Other Factors to Consider When Looking for Online Graduate Programs in Applied Behavior Analysis

Just being affordable, acceptable, and online is no way to quantify your final choice for a qualifying ABA degree or certificate, though.

While each of these is a strong and flexible program, any particular one may be more or less suitable depending on many individual factors. For example, if you don’t yet have a master’s, you’re going to be looking at full degree programs; if you do, then a certificate is probably going to be more your speed.

Similarly, different universities have different focus areas within which their ABA studies are offered. Some, for instance, are run by schools of psychology; others are offered by a school of education. Even though the base requirements for certification will be the same, you can imagine that the context and the content will have a certain angle that varies according to those fields.

You’ll also want to look to other variables that include:

How important are instructor quality and experience in online ABA degrees?

Particularly when you are learning online, you need teachers who really have mastered the art of instruction. At the same time, for mastering the principles and practices of ABA, you want faculty who have walked the walk, and who are involved actively in research and pushing the boundaries of the field.

What is the depth of online support systems and remote instruction expertise for the online ABA program?

Instructors alone don’t make up the entire remote learning experience. School administrators, support staff, and information technology teams put a lot into what you ultimately experience as an online student. You’ll want to look to schools that have taken the time and put in the energy to get it right with learning management systems and online support structures.

How much should you consider reputation and ties to the ABA community?

You can’t focus entirely on online aspects of degrees, even when the degree itself is online. Real-world relationships matter between instructors, research centers, and the surrounding community of ABA practitioners—whether that’s a region or the entire country. The vital research data and practical experience that flows back into these programs is critical for creating an up-to-date education for future BCBA®s.

What are the core areas of research and funding levels for the behavior analysis department?

Speaking of research, a field that is rooted in experimental practice needs a lot of it to stay afloat. It’s a key skillset in ABA, and students learn by doing. So schools need the funding to keep those efforts going to engage master’s students. Just as importantly, you’ll need to consider what practice area you are interested in specializing in and ensure that your school selection has opportunities for you to focus there. ABA is a field with exceptionally broad application, and not all schools can offer all kinds of experiences or opportunities.

So we give you enough leads on each of those factors so you can drill down further and identify the best options on the list for your personal ABA plans. Because cost is clearly a factor, we also highlight the total cost of program completion, and let you know how many credits you’ll need to get through.

You’ll also find a list of other highlights we found for the program, from high pass rates on the BCBA® exam, to praise from various rating agencies. And you’ll get a little snapshot of what makes the school’s character and online experience unique.

Where a school has multiple programs available that are entirely online, the data shown for cost of completion, student-to-instructor ratios, and number of credits required are for the first program in the list.

This list features programs that our editorial staff hand selected to present as top recommendations. We believe the many aspects of a program that come together to create an exceptional student experience can’t be reduced to numbers alone, so no formula was used to attempt to score or rank these programs. Instead, they represent our top picks based on a thoughtful review of the things we know mean the most to students. Each one of these programs offers something unique, and all come equally highly recommended. We stand behind the principal of editorial integrity and make these recommendations independently and without compensation.

Other Questions People Commonly Ask About Fully Online Applied Behavior Analysis Degree Programs

Applied behavior analysis is a constantly evolving field. It’s built around experimentation and ongoing research, so the art of asking questions is kind of integral to the whole deal.

You will probably start that process early, long before you even start studying in the field, particularly if you are interested primarily in online programs. While online degrees and certificates open up pathways to BACB certification for many individuals who have jobs and families, they are a relatively new concept and many of the details involved aren’t immediately obvious.

But no fear. We have you covered here with the answers to some of the most common questions people also ask about online ABA degree and certificate options.

Can a 100 Percent Online ABA Degree Still Qualify Me For BACB Credentials?

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board does not distinguish between online and traditional types of degree programs, so that’s not a concern you should have when exploring online degrees or certificates.

The important thing for any student to consider when looking at ABA programs leading to BCBA® or BCaBA® credentials is whether or not the program has been recognized or accredited by ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International) or APBA (Association of Professional Behavior Analysts), or, currently, contains a sequence of courses verified by ABAI (VCS) as meeting BACB standards.

Are Online ABA Degrees Available With Accreditation, Recognition, or Verified Course Sequences?

Fortunately, there are plenty of online degree and certificate options that have met those standards. All of the schools and programs listed here have either accreditation, recognition, or contain a verified course sequence.

However, some due diligence is in order—the VCS system of designating acceptable programs for BACB certification will be sunsetting at the end of 2025. ABAI will no longer be accepting applications from schools for VCS courses after that date. While VCS coordinators at existing schools will continue to be able to vouch for your training, you’ll want to make sure your choice will continue to support the process in 2026 and beyond.

Does the VCS System Sunsetting in 2025 Mean Online Programs Will No Longer Qualify For BACB Credentials?

The impact of VCS going away is more likely to impact schools than individual students. Both ABAI and BACB are attempting to make the final adjustments without any undue burden on students. In fact, the changes are designed to make the process of finding a suitable degree even easier.

However, this process will not be any different for online versus traditional programs. Schools will shift to the new process for recognition and accreditation regardless of the format in which they offer their programs.

How Will Online Programs Be Recognized for Acceptance Once The VCS System Goes Away?

Like most other degree programs and certificates, online ABA education options will shift primarily into the new Tiered Model of Education from ABAI. While schools will primarily move through the recognition path of this model toward full accreditation, there are four specific tiers aimed at recognizing suitable certificate programs:

  • 3a – Recognized non-degree program with experiential learning from an institution of higher education
  • 3b – Recognized non-degree program without experiential learning from an institution of higher education
  • 4a – Recognized non-degree program with experiential learning from another organization
  • 4b – Recognized non-degree program without experiential learning from another organization

Tier 4 is currently only available to institutions outside the United States, and even they are strongly encouraged to develop agreements with higher education institutions to continue their courses. Most certificate programs on this list are likely to shift to one of the Tier 3 modes as the VCS system sunsets. They will still be approved for BCBA® qualification.

How Do You Satisfy BACB’s Practice Hour Requirements With an Online ABA Program?

There’s no requirement that you finish, or even start, your required field experience while you are engaged in your degree program. With at least 1500 hours of practice ahead of you, there was never much chance that you were going to squeeze in all your practice hours while you were attending school, anyway.

So if field experience isn’t wrapped up in your degree program, you can still complete it independently. Still, top online programs often will help you get started by working with you on finding appropriate placement options near your location.

Can I Choose an Online Program From Out-Of-State and Still Qualify for Licensure?

Online programs that are accredited or recognized as meeting BACB requirements will generally fulfill the educational standards for states that require ABA licensing. That’s because most states, either directly or indirectly, use those same requirements for licensure purposes. If anything, you may find that your state requirements aren’t quite as stringent as those of BACB. So the location the school is in matters very little for licensing purposes.
