Fully qualified and licensed behavior analysts require a master’s degree to practice in the field. But there is far more to do in behavior analysis, and a far greater need for trained professionals, than the master’s degree pipeline can sustain. There is a lot of good that can be accomplished in day-to-day interaction with patients in almost any population without a full six years or more of study behind you.
So whether you choose to study education, psychology, or another discipline at the bachelor’s level, you can add the qualification of ‘assistant behavior analyst’ to your repertoire by completing the right series of courses and becoming certified.
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s (BACB) Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA®) credential is the standard for anybody looking to establish themselves in the most basic qualifications of ABA, whether in the clinic or the classroom.
Due to the demand, it is an extremely marketable credential. It’s also one that is usually required to land a job as a dedicated ABA assistant. Autism insurance mandate laws almost always state that only ABA services that are provided by board certified professionals are eligible for reimbursement. This makes hiring BCaBA®-certified assistants an absolute imperative for ABA clinics in most cases.
What Kind of Education Do You Need to Become Board-Certified as an Assistant Behavior Analyst?
Ok – so what do you need to qualify for board certification?
The list isn’t long:
- A bachelor’s degree in any discipline
- ABA courses that meet board requirements
- Some pre-professional experience
- A passing score on the BCaBA® exam
That’s it.
And what’s the easiest way to make sure you take the right ABA courses?
Well, that’s a more complicated question.
Where Can You Find ABA Bachelor’s and Course Sequence Options for BCaBA® Certification?
What Other Factors Should I Consider When Evaluating a Program Leading to BCaBA® Qualification?
How Can You Find The Right Coursework To Become Qualified as a BCaBA®?
That’s because the process for finding, and having your coursework approved, is in the midst of changing.
For both bachelor’s degree programs and stand-alone certificates, you have three options open until January of 2027:
- Choose one that incorporates the BACB’s Verified Course Sequence (VCS)
- Pick a program from ABAI’s list of recognized programs
- Find an option that is fully accredited by ABAI (Association for Behavior Analysis International)
What’s magical about January of 2027? Option 1 from that list goes away as the sun sets on the VCS system. Already, at the end of 2025, no new programs will be accepted to the VCS system. All schools must move to recognition and eventually accreditation.
Enrolling in a pre-approved bachelor’s program or stand-alone BCaBA® course sequence simply takes the guesswork and stress out of meeting the education requirements to qualify for the BCaBA® exam.
Still, with the high-quality schools on this list, you can expect most to make the transition and hold your hand through the coursework attestation process that is used in the meantime.
Where Can You Find ABA Bachelor’s and Course Sequence Options for BCaBA® Certification?
So where can you find these programs? It turns out they are all over! The demand for qualified behavioral assistants in nearly every state means that there are a lot of programs offering this coursework across the country.
But in some ways, that makes your task even more challenging. After all, it’s not just about finding a program, but identifying the best one with your goals in mind.
We have you covered…
Selection Criteria
Here we show 57 schools in the US that currently offer the pre-approved BCaBA® course sequence as part of a bachelor’s degree program (usually in psychology or education, or ABA specifically)… and those that offer stand-alone course sequence options for people who already hold or are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program.
- All schools hold regional or national accreditation through an agency recognized by the US Department of Education.
- All schools offer average annual undergraduate tuition rates in-line with the national average for public and private institutions adjusted for location.
What Other Factors Should I Consider When Evaluating a Program Leading to BCaBA® Qualification?
Of course, with more than 50 different programs on the menu, you’re going to want to make your call based on more than just throwing darts at your screen (don’t do that, in fact). Instead, you’ll want to take a deep dive into what genuinely goes into providing top programs in behavior analysis. There aren’t factors that we weigh directly, but they are the building blocks of these top programs, and you will want to assess them in each unique combination for schools under your consideration.
What Kind of Instructors Work at the Top Undergraduate ABA Degree and Certificate Programs?
Clearly, who you are learning from is one of the most important factors in how much you absorb. Professors have to have a knack for teaching on top of a command of the underlying skills and principles of behavior analysis. So you’re going to want to look for programs where the instructors have not only extensive practical experience delivering ABA, but also formal academic expertise. They have managed research programs and worked their way up as TAs and assistants to hone their classroom skills. They have compassion and motivation to build each of their own students up to their full potential.
Is Practicum Experience Important for Top BCaBA® Certification and Degree Programs?
You bet! While not every option, particularly certificate programs, will include a field experience component, it’s always better to get that training started as part of a program than to have to do it on your own. That’s because, as in every field, things are a little bit different out where the rubber meets the road. If the same professors teaching you the theory are helping you break it down in the real world, that’s easier than having to interpret between different practitioners.
Some BCaBA® candidates may come to certification having already built field experience as RBTs; in these cases, you might have less need for a program with built-in practicum.
Why Would You Want a School With Close Community Ties For Studying BCaBA® Coursework?
For starters, let’s stick with the practicum angle for a second: field experience isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are real differences between learning in, say, a grade school environment versus a drug rehabilitation center (at least, we hope there are). That has a strong bearing on your skill development and your qualifications for entering specific kinds of practice. So you want a school that has good ties to local centers that exemplify your ABA interests.
It’s also true that community ties to those clinics, schools, and hospitals run both ways. Students get a chance to turn theory into practice, but the schools also benefit from a chance to develop new theories based on current practices. You’ll be getting the latest in proven treatment techniques by picking a program with strong relationships to active treatment centers.
How Does Excellence in Research Benefit You In BCaBA® Courses?
That’s basically the same argument behind picking a school that has strong ABA research programs, as well. Your training will be more up-to-date and your skillset will be more in-demand when you are learning the trade at one of the schools most active in groundbreaking ABA research.
Every student is unique and so each top choice will be different. Your combination
We’ve included a few key points so you can narrow down your options and find the program that meets your needs… and your budget. And to make it a little easier to find the program that works for you, we organized the list by state.
This list features programs that our editorial staff hand selected to present as top recommendations. We believe the many aspects of a program that come together to create an exceptional student experience can’t be reduced to numbers alone, so no formula was used to attempt to score or rank these programs. Instead, they represent our top picks based on a thoughtful review of the things we know mean the most to students. Each one of these programs offers something unique, and all come equally highly recommended. We stand behind the principal of editorial integrity and make these recommendations independently and without compensation.

- Program is taught with a culturally-sensitive and community-focused dynamic
- Optional opportunities available for community-engaged research
Don’t let the headline on the website fool you—although the MS in Psychology Behavior Analysis track is the focus for the department at UAA, there are not one, not two, but three different options for getting coursework to qualify you for the BCaBA® here. A full psych degree with BA coursework hits the spot for new students; other majors can add on a minor for specialization in education or related areas; active professionals with degrees can take the certificate path. That can be particularly important with relatively few options for studies in Alaska. The UAA faculty and staff understand the community and help each student meet the challenges in finding appropriate experiential supervision and field placements.

Other Questions People Frequently Ask About The Best BCaBA® Prep Courses and Degree Options
Can I Practice Independently With a BCaBA® Certification?
No, BCaBA®s aren’t able to practice behavior analysis without supervision. Not all states have a separate license level for BCaBA®s, but all of them do prevent anyone other than qualified and licensed BCBA®s, psychologists (and sometimes other mental health or medical professionals), and often immediate family members or caregivers from practicing ABA independently.
That said, the supervision that most BCaBA®s work under still allows independent decision making and use of their skillset with patients. In fact, BCaBA®s share the same task list as BCBA®s. They may themselves supervise RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) in conducting treatments. So although a BCBA® has to sign off on the work at the end of the day, there is plenty of room for decision-making in the assistant role… as you would expect from any job requiring a bachelor’s degree.
What is The Difference Between a Bachelor’s Degree in ABA and an ABA Course Sequence?
To be clear, you will always need a bachelor’s degree from a qualifying institution (essentially, a generally accredited university) to qualify for a BCaBA® certification. A stand-alone course sequence, even with a Verified Course Sequence or official recognition or accreditation, is not enough.
That said, if you already hold the degree, then a course sequence offered through a certificate program, plus supervised field experience, are the boxes you have left to check before being eligible to take the BCaBA® exam.
What is The Difference Between Accreditation, Recognition, and Verified Course Sequence (VCS)?
Since VCS is going away soon, there isn’t too much need to understand exactly how it works. Basically, it filled two needs:
- It allowed BACB to quickly assess completed coursework for BCaBA® qualifications
- It allowed students a way to know what programs would fill the BCaBA® requirements
In theory, anyone applying for a BCaBA® could submit coursework and have it individually evaluated, but the process was time-consuming. Instead, today, VCS coordinators at approved schools typically attest that your studies match BACB requirements.
This filled a gap between the big demand for BCaBA®-qualified candidates in the market and the slow, thorough process of ABAI accreditation.
That gap is now covered by ABAI-recognition. Recognized schools are starting in on the accreditation process but haven’t yet been fully assessed. Still, the coursework has been deemed adequate. So any recognized school will get you the training you need.
This is part of ABAI’s new Tiered Model of Education, with several steps along the path to accreditation.
Full accreditation is the end goal here, and should be achieved by 2031. After that date, only graduates of accredited programs will be qualified for BACB credentials.
Why Can’t I Pick a Program Accredited by APBA for my BCaBA® Certification?
You might have read about the APBA (Association of Professional Behavior Analysts), another organization that is planning to offer accreditation for behavior analyst programs. APBA is already recognized as an accepted accreditor by BACB.
However, APBA currently plans only to accredit master’s-level degree programs. Bachelor’s or post-baccalaureate certificate programs are not on the menu, so BCaBA® candidates will have to stick with the ABAI process
Does Earning a BCaBA® Help Me Eventually Become a BCBA®?
The BCaBA® credential doesn’t have a direct pathway toward earning your BCBA® later; you will still need a master’s degree with the required graduate coursework, additional field experience, and to pass the BCBA® exam.
However, many people don’t go directly from bachelor’s to master’s level studies. Having a BCaBA® can allow you to start work and become more familiar with ABA practice in the field, as well as earning a solid living while you are considering taking the next step up the ladder.
